    Statues like this one belonged to a row of depictions of the sixteen Arhats which are often shown along the eastern and western walls of the main hall of temples. Famous examples of the Arhats of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition in China proper are seen on the Wutaishan mountains or in the Yonghegong temple in Beijing.
